LASIK FAQs

At Gregg Family Eye Care in Secane, PA, we receive many inquiries about LASIK surgery and how it works to improve your vision. Following are the answers to several questions our optometrist frequently receives regarding LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK FAQs

What is LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is a surgical eye procedure designed to correct refractive errors. An excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea of your eye to correct problems with myopia, farsightedness, and astigmatism. After undergoing LASIK, you will not need to wear glasses or contacts to see.

How Do I Know If I’m a Good Candidate for LASIK?

You must meet certain requirements to qualify for LASIK surgery. Candidates are generally 18 years of age or older with no major medical conditions or eye health issues that can affect the outcome of their surgery or hinder their healing. In addition, you must have a stable eye prescription for at least one year. Our Secane, PA optometrist will perform an eye exam to test your visual acuity and eye health before reviewing your health history to determine if LASIK is a good fit for you.

Will LASIK Surgery Give Me 20/20 Vision?

There is no guarantee you will have 20/20 vision after LASIK surgery. However, the procedure will greatly improve your vision to the extent that you're no longer dependent on prescription eyeglasses or contacts to enjoy good vision.

Is LASIK Safe?

Due to advancements in this field, complications from LASIK are rare. By selecting an eye surgeon with ample LASIK experience, you can get the best outcome from your surgery.

Is LASIK Painful?

No. You will be given anesthetic drops to numb your eyes before the surgery. Some patients are also given a mild sedative to relieve any anxiety they may be feeling before the surgery. After the eye surgery, your eye doctor may prescribe drops to relieve eye irritation and help you heal. For your convenience, your eye surgeon can treat both eyes at the same time, so you don’t have to return for a separate LASIK treatment.

How Long Will It Take to Recover from LASIK Surgery?

Most LASIK patients recover in one day and can resume normal activities with improved vision. Your vision will continue to improve over the next few months. You will be asked to forgo some activities such as swimming and contact sports during the first few weeks of recovery.
