This includes eye exams to determine whether or not a patient is a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery.

LASIK

Who Are the Best Lasik Surgery Candidates?

Ideal candidates for LASIK eye surgery meet these requirements:

  • Are at least 18 years of age
  • Have no existing health problems
  • Don’t take medication that compromises the immune system
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Have a healthy cornea and enough corneal thickness
  • No active eye diseases
  • Have at least 20/40 vision with either glasses or contacts
  • Have a stable prescription (at least six months without a change)

Our optometrist will perform a thorough examination to make an informed decision. Most patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can expect positive results from LASIK eye surgery. Patients with glaucoma or cataracts aren’t good candidates for this surgery.

What to Expect During a LASIK Eye Exam

We will ask you questions about your medical, surgical, and eye health history. We also will want to know why you’re considering LASIK, the medications you’re taking, your lifestyle, and any family history of vision problems. During your visit, we will perform different tests that help us determine your LASIK eligibility, including:

  1. Dry eye testing
  2. Pupil testing
  3. Corneal topography
  4. Keratometry
  5. Wavefront analysis

Conditions Corrected by LASIK

LASIK surgery can correct refractive errors, which prevent your eyes from focusing clearly. Some refractive errors that LASIK can help with include:

  • Myopia
  • Hyperopia
  • Astigmatism
  • Presbyopia

Patients with a lazy eye, cataracts, glaucoma, or keratoconus are not viable candidates for LASIK surgery.
