Understanding Keratoconus
Keratoconus is sometimes frustrating to patients because it follows an unpredictable progression. In some cases, it takes a decade for the most common symptoms of blurred vision and light or glare sensitivity to appear. However, for other individuals, they develop much more quickly.
This condition arises after the cornea of the eye thins. This process results in a change in the shape of the cornea from a ball to a cone as well as a distortion of the cornea’s normally smooth surface. This is called irregular astigmatism. A weakening of the collagen fibers that normally secure the cornea permits it to bulge over time.
Researchers have yet to pinpoint a cause for this condition. However, many suspect that environmental and genetic factors might have a role. Roughly 1 in 10 keratoconus patients has one parent with the disorder.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms associated with this condition include:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Frequent changes in eyewear prescriptions
- Vision that suddenly worsens or becomes cloudy
- Increased light or glare sensitivity, especially after dark
Treatment Options
Fortunately, we offer several treatment options for keratoconus once a comprehensive eye exam has revealed a positive diagnosis. For patients still in the early stages, eyeglasses are the standard therapy. Once the progression of the disorder occurs, many patients benefit from special contact lenses. This typically includes a series with piggyback, scleral, and gas permeable contact lenses.
Collagen cross-linking pairs vitamin B12 and ultraviolet light and can be helpful for some sufferers. Surgeons can implant inserts known as intacs to return the curve of the cornea to normal in some cases. A final option is a corneal transplant. Our practice provides pre- and post-operative care when surgery is deemed appropriate.
