Macular Degeneration

The Macula

The macula is the part of the eye that sits in the center of the retina and allows you to see things directly in front of you. The macula allows you to see details and colors in rich clarity. When the macula begins to degenerate, you may lose some of these abilities. There are two types of macular degeneration. Our optometrist will look for signs of both types of macular degeneration during the annual eye exam.

Signs of Macular Degeneration

One of the most frightening aspects of living with this condition is that the symptoms often develop without pain. Instead, you may experience:

  • Distortions in your vision
  • Inability to read in typical lighting
  • Decreased brightness in vision
  • Difficulty adapting your vision in the dark
  • Blurriness
  • Blind spots
  • Central vision loss
  • Asymmetrical vision

If you notice any of the signs of this condition, speak with an eye doctor right away. The doctor may be able to stop the progress of this condition.

Dry Macular Degeneration

Dry macular degeneration is the most common form of this condition. The retina becomes damaged over time, leading to a condition that progresses slowly. The results can be devastating, leaving you without vision in the center portion of your eyesight. Those with dry macular degeneration only see out of their periphery, which impairs their ability to participate in basic activities.

Wet Macular Degeneration

Wet macular degeneration is not as common, but it is just as serious. Just like its counterpart, wet macular degeneration can lead to blindness. This condition involves blood vessels that leak behind the macula, leading to permanent scarring and damage. Unlike the dry version of this condition, it progresses much more quickly and requires urgent medical care.
