Eye & Vision Exams

Eye & Vision Exams from Our Orlando Optometrist

If you want to ensure a lifetime of optimal eye health and visual acuity for yourself and your family members, there's no better place to start than by scheduling regular eye and vision exams here at Southwest Orlando Eye Care. Our Orlando optometrist, Dr. John Nowell, believes strongly in the value of preventative care and early detection as a key element in preserving in our patients' eyesight. We echo the recommendation of the American Optometric Association that you should have an eye exam either every year or every other year, depending on your current ocular health and your risk of specific problems.

Preventative eye care should include eye health testing, eye function testing and vision testing. Our optometry center can provide all of these services in the course of a routine eye exam in Orlando. Eye function testing is especially important for babies and small children because their eyes and brains are still developing their ability to collaborate on producing normal vision, and hand-to-eye coordination. By patients of all ages can benefit from our examinations of such basic processes as eye teaming, focusing power, eye muscle alignment and eye coordination.

Eye health evaluations are equally important for individuals at all stages of life, although it's worth noting that older people tend to become increasingly prone to age-related eye diseases and disorders. Our testing methods include:

  • Searching for blind spots or distortions in your vision that may indicate retinal problems
  • Examination of the retina with the pupils dilated to check for diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment and other sight-robbing problems at the back of the eye
  • Using tonometry to check for excess fluid pressure inside the eye, a potential sign of glaucoma
  • Slit lamp testing to check the lens, cornea and other structures for possible cataracts

Even if your eyes are healthy, you still suffer from vision problems (whether you realize it or not) due to a refractive error -- an abnormality in the shape or contours of the eye that impairs the eye's ability to focus images properly. By reading letters or viewing symbols on an eye chart, our patients reveal to us how accurately they can view objects at different distances. If you are nearsighted, farsighted or astigmatic, our Orlando optometrist can use a phoropter to determine the necessary corrective lens prescription. We can also use this technique to diagnose an age-related refractive error called presbyopia and prescribe bifocal or multifocal lenses to correct it.

Time to Schedule an Eye Exam in Orlando?

Healthy, younger eyes can get by with an eye exam in Orlando every other year. If your child suffers from a refractive error, however, we may need to schedule more frequent exams so we can update the corrective lens prescription. Diseased or aging eyes may need at least one exam per year. Call (407) 271-8931 to schedule an comprehensive eye exam at our Orlando optometry center!
