General & Family Dentistry

Dental Care Bay City

At Dr. Kernstock's practice we are committed to giving patients beautiful smiles that last a lifetime.  The best foundation for a stunning smile is offering outstanding general and family dental services.  Prevention is key, and Dr. Kernstock and his knowledgeable staff of dental professionals will make sure that every patient receives the most thorough care and education available.

The Dental Examination

The first part of a general dental visit may include radiographs which allow Dr. Kernstock to examine the health of your teeth and underlying bone structure. During your examination, one of our dental hygienists will examine each tooth for cavities, plaque and damage. You will also undergo a periodontal examination where your gums will be gently probed to detect any signs of gum disease. The final step of your general dental visit is an oral cancer examination and a head and neck examination, which allows us to detect any potential issues with glands or joints, such as TMJ disorder. After your thorough examination, we will sit down with you to discuss the results of the exam and plan any other necessary repairs or treatments.

Thorough Dental Cleaning

teeth_cleaning_1.jpgThe second part of your bi-annual check-up at Dr. Kernstock's office consists of a complete professional dental cleaning conducted by one of our gentle and caring dental hygienists. While it is recommended for adults to brush their teeth three times a day and floss once daily, the reality is that most people only brush twice daily and floss rarely.  Even the most hygiene-dedicated patient who brushes and flosses regularly fails to achieve the same results as that of a professional cleaning by one of our highly trained dental hygienists. For the best dental health and cavity prevention, it is important to have your teeth professionally cleaned, polished, and treated with fluoride twice a year.

Fillings

Dental fillings are used to repair teeth affected by minor damage and decay, restoring their full function and health. Your skilled dentist, Dr. Kernstock, will first remove the decayed or damaged portion of the tooth. He will then fill in the tooth to restore its structure, function, and health.

Oral Surgery

Tooth extraction can help to prevent infection from spreading to other areas of the mouth and can help your mouth begin to heal. At Dr. Kernstock's practice the dental team work hard to ensure that every dental treatment is comfortable and painless.

Wisdom teeth, which are usually the last four teeth to erupt in the mouth, often need to be extracted. In many cases, there is not enough room in the mouth for the wisdom teeth to properly erupt. If the wisdom teeth do not erupt properly and are not extracted, they may cause a number of dental health problems, such as:

    • Periodontal (gum) disease
    • Tooth decay
    • Red, swollen, and painful gums
    • Overcrowding of the teeth
    • A wisdom tooth becoming impacted (stuck in the jaw) and never breaking through the gums
