Lasik Eye Surgery

If you have lived much of your life with vision problems, you may have dreamed of a day when you wouldn't have to worry about your glasses fogging up in the cold or your contacts drying out during the day. You may have dreamed of waking up, opening your eyes, and seeing the world. If the reason why the world has been blurry is a refractive error, (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism), then there is a good chance you will benefit from LASIK eye surgery.

.

What is LASIK Surgery

LASIK is an acronym that stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses, and it is the most common vision correction surgery. The procedure takes about 15 minutes and involves the surgeon creating a thin flap in the cornea with a laser. Another cool ultraviolet laser is used under the flap to reshape the cornea so that light will better reflect on the cornea. Since refractive errors involve the shape of the cornea in different ways, a skilled LASIK surgeon can fix any of these errors and correct vision.  In most cases, LASIK is highly successful, and most will have 20/25 vision or better.

Is LASIK Eye Surgery Right For Me?

If you think you would benefit from LASIK surgery, the first step is to schedule an appointment with our optometrist and mention that you are considering LASIK. During your exam, our optometrist will evaluate your eyes and should be able to tell you if you are a good candidate. There are also some basic guidelines you can refer to that are standard for the procedure:

  • Age: Most surgeons prefer to do vision treatment on those over 18, and sometimes 21.
  • Healthy eyes: Recent eye injuries, infections, or severe dry eye syndrome may disqualify you for LASIK
  • Thick enough corneas: It is difficult to reshape thin corneas, though sometimes possible
  • Regular sized pupils: Naturally large Pupils are more likely to experience post-surgical side effects including the appearance of halos and trouble with night vision
  • A prescription within accepted parameters: Too severe cases of nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can increase the risk of complications following surgery
