Common Glaucoma Treatments

Glaucoma

If you've recently been diagnosed with glaucoma, or if you suspect that you may have this disease, there are things that you can do to improve your condition. Ask our optometrist Greenwich Eye Care about these options if you are struggling with glaucoma.

Eye Drops

One of the very first treatments that is attempted with all glaucoma patients is prescription eye drops. There are several different types of drops that can address low pressure in the eye through different means. Most brands of eye drops work by either inhibiting the production of fluid in the eye or causing the eye to expel this fluid more rapidly than usual.

Oral Medication

Depending on the severity of the condition, an eye care oral medication may be prescribed in addition to eye drops or as a replacement for them. This medication usually works by inhibiting the production of eye fluid.

Eye Surgery

There are several different types of glaucoma surgery that may be warranted in the event that eye drops and oral medications don't work well enough to control symptoms. Laser therapy is considered to be the least invasive type of surgery. This procedure is usually done in the doctor's office and requires the least amount of recovery time. The laser is used to open clogged ducts. If laser therapy doesn't work, a different type of surgery that will insert drainage tubes into the ducts. Other surgeries can be done on the white of the eye.

It is possible to combine glaucoma surgery with cataract surgery or other procedures. Your eye doctor will be able to recommend a specific course of treatment based on the type of glaucoma that you have been diagnosed with.
