There is a moment that happens in my exam room that never loses its impact. A child sits in the chair, unsure, sometimes quiet, often unaware that anything is wrong. They’ve adapted. They’ve learned to navigate a world that has always been slightly out of focus. Then we place the lenses in front of their eyes. And everything changes. Their posture shifts. Their expression softens. Their eyes widen as they begin to take in details they’ve never fully seen before. They look around slowly, almost cautiously. And then, almost every time, they say it:
“I can see.”
It is a simple sentence. But behind it is a profound shift. One that has the power to change the trajectory of a child’s life.
A Need Hidden in Plain Sight
Eye Care from the Heart was officially launched in March of 2020, but its origin was not a single moment. It was something I had been witnessing for years. Through community involvement, including working alongside organizations such as the Greenwich Lions Club, I began seeing children who were struggling not because they lacked ability, but because they lacked access. They were sitting in classrooms unable to see the board clearly. They were falling behind in reading. They were experiencing headaches, eye strain, and fatigue. And in many cases, no one realized that vision was the underlying issue. Even in a community like Greenwich the reality is more complex. One in four children has a vision problem significant enough to impact learning. Yet for many families, access to comprehensive eye care remains limited by cost, insurance barriers, or competing financial priorities. Eye Care from the Heart was created to respond to that need directly, intentionally, and without compromise.
Redefining Access to Care
At its core, the program is simple in concept but powerful in execution.
Children in need receive:
• Comprehensive medical eye examinations
• Advanced diagnostic testing
• Early intervention for conditions such as myopia and amblyopia
• Prescription glasses when needed
But what defines this program is not just what is provided, it is how it is provided. There is no difference in the level of care. No reduced standard. No limitation in technology or attention. Each child is treated with the same precision, respect, and clinical excellence as any patient in a private setting. Because their future deserves nothing less. Beyond Vision: Restoring Confidence The impact of clear vision extends far beyond the eye. When a child cannot see clearly, learning becomes effortful. Confidence begins to erode. Participation declines. Over time, frustration replaces curiosity. And yet, children rarely articulate that something is wrong. They adapt. They assume the world looks this way for everyone. Until it doesn’t. Through Eye Care from the Heart, we are not simply prescribing glasses we are restoring confidence, re-engaging students in the classroom, and allowing children to experience the world with clarity for the first time.
A Community Effort
The growth of this program has been made possible through the support of organizations that share a commitment to meaningful, local impact.
A recent grant from the Greenwich Point Yacht Club (PYP) has allowed us to expand our reach and serve more children in need. This partnership reflects a shared understanding: that investing in children’s health is an investment in the future of the community itself.
Lives Changed, One Child at a Time
Since its launch, Eye Care from the Heart has served several children each one with a story that matters.
One parent recently shared:
“We didn’t realize how much our child was struggling until this. Within weeks, everything changed school, confidence, even mood. This program gave us something we didn’t know we were missing.”
These stories are not rare. They are the reason this work continues.
A Vision for the Future
What began as a response to a local need has grown into something much larger. The goal is not only to continue serving children in Greenwich and surrounding communities, but to build a model that can expand reaching more families, more schools, and more children who might otherwise go unseen. Because the reality is simple: A child who cannot see clearly cannot fully engage with the world around them. And a problem so easily diagnosed and often so easily corrected should never be the reason a child falls behind.
A Promise That Endures
Eye Care from the Heart is more than a program.
It is a commitment to equity, to dignity, and to the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to see clearly and thrive. And for those who choose to support it, it becomes something more: A direct way to change a life.
One child.
One moment.
One clear future at a time.
Thank you,
Dr. Inna Lazar
