Keratoconus explained.

What Is Keratoconus?

Keratoconus, sometimes called KC, is a non- inflammatory eye condition in which the cornea becomes thin over time. Thus, the normal dome shape begins to bulges outward like a cone. This results in vision changes. Its cause is unknown.  It is estimated that 1 in every 2,000 people have it.

Common symptoms of keratoconus include:

  • Double vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Distorted vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • Objects look distorted
  • Lights streaking
  • Ghost images
  • Being uncomfortable driving due to blurry vision.

Symptoms generally occur between puberty and late teen years but can occur in those in their early 20s as well. Generally, the condition will worsen over a course of 10 to 20 years before stabilizing.

Keratoconus Treatment

Treatment begins with a comprehensive eye health examination.  Dr. Yee also uses a topographer to obtain a map of the entire cornea.  Treatment options begin with eyeglasses, however, they may not provide adequate vision. Contact lenses usually rigid gas permeable lenses designed for keratoconus would be the next treatment of choice.  Scleral lenses are also used in the treatment of keratoconus.  These are larger than traditional rigid gas permeable lenses and provide complete coverage over the cornea decreasing any lid interaction thereby increasing lens comfort. For those looking for keratoconus contact lenses, Dr. Fern Yee of Eyes of Texas Vision Care offers scleral contact lenses as a solution.  A surgical procedure called corneal cross linking can also be performed to help prevent progression.

Ongoing Care Is Necessary

For those with keratoconus, it is essential to maintain regular eye doctor appointments. This is the best way to ensure your vision remains protected long term. Yearly comprehensive eye examinations are recommended to ensure the contact lenses are fitting properly and maintain your eye health.
