Annual Eye Exams

Even if your family typically has excellent vision, prevention is still crucial. Many eye and vision problems occur gradually, and you may not notice symptoms early on, without annual vision screenings from an experienced Austin optometrist.

During your eye exam, we want to learn about any vision problems or symptoms you may have noticed, your overall health history, your workplace and any medicines you take regularly. Visual Acuity Testing

During your comprehensive annual eye exam, vision testing is one of the key components. Our optometrist in Austin measures the sharpness of your vision with the traditional eye chart. If vision testing shows that your vision could be improved (if it is less than 20/20 for reading and distance), we can prescribe corrective lenses (eyeglasses or contacts). In some cases, eye exercises are all that is required or may be recommended along with other vision correction methods.

Functional Eye Exam

During this phase of your eye exam, our Austin optometrist conducts testing of your:

• Peripheral (side) vision
• Depth perception
• Color perception
• Light responsiveness
• Eye muscle function, including the ability to focus properly and coordinate both eyes to work as a team.  

Physical Eye Health

Your detailed eye exam also includes a thorough visual inspection and evaluation of your eye structure and tissues, such as the cornea (your eye’s clear lens), the sclera (the white part of your eyes), the eyelids, the retina and more. This part of your eye exam includes:

• Physical exam of the eyes, which can reveal potential eye problems like macular degeneration and more.
• Measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) in the eye (tonometry procedure) to look for signs of glaucoma.
• Magnifying instruments and bright light help our optometrist to view the internal eye in detail.
• Dilation (eye drops) may be used to relax the pupil and allow a better internal view.

All of these tests are completely painless and take just a few short minutes. If your eyes are dilated, you will need to wait a few minutes for the pupil to expand and relax. Our optometrist may be able to tell you in advance if this procedure is needed. If so, you may need to arrange a ride home, because dilation makes your eyes extra sensitive to light, temporarily.
