Hyperopia

Hyperopia Treatment from Your Optometrist in Dallas, TX

Hyperopia is a refractive error that affects up to 25 percent of Americans, according to our optometrist.  Its more common name is farsightedness.  A comprehensive eye exam at our Insight Complete Eye Care in Dallas is the first step toward diagnosis and treatment of this common vision disorder.

Understanding Farsightedness

Patients suffering from farsightedness find it much easier to see objects at a distance than those close to them.  However, in some farsighted patients, both near and far images appear blurred.

The cause of hyperopia is an abnormal eye shape.  In patients with normal vision, light inters the eye, is refracted, and bends as it passes through the cornea and arrives, focused, on the retina.  Once the retina senses the light, it decodes it and sends messages through the optic nerve to the brain to interpret and create a visual image.

Light falls behind the retina of a farsighted eye because the eye is shorter than normal.  Another potential cause is a misshapen cornea or lens.

Our Dallas optometrist notes that symptoms of this disorder vary among our patients.  These are the most common:

  • Blurry vision, especially with close objects
  • Eyestrain
  • Squinting
  • Headaches or discomfort after an extended period performing close tasks

Treatment for Farsightedness

Our eye doctor diagnoses farsightedness during a comprehensive eye exam, which includes an evaluation of the individual’s general eye health.  Patients can expect to have their eyes dilated in order for our doctor to perform this assessment.  The procedure includes looking through a succession of lenses and reveals additional vision issues such as astigmatism, presbyopia, and nearsightedness.

While there is no specific way to prevent hyperopia, patients can help maintain the best visual health by scheduling an eye exam on a regular basis.  The personalized treatment plan for each hyperopia patient includes a recommendation for corrective eyewear or surgery.

Corrective eyewear includes both eyeglasses, which are the easiest and safest way to correct farsighted vision, and a variety of types of contact lenses.  Refractive surgery is sometimes an option for individuals who are mildly or moderately farsighted.  It includes a LASIK, LASEK, or PRK procedure typically performed on an outpatient basis.
