Diabetes and Diabetic Eye Treatment

Diabetes and Diabetic Eye Treatment

People with diabetes commonly exhibit a number of predictable eye conditions. This is why everyone with diabetes should see an eye doctor on a regular basis. Our ophthalmologist at the Insight Complete Eye Care Institute in Dallas has vast experience in treating people who have diabetes and preserving their sight.

Eye Problems

The most common problem with diabetics is diabetic retinopathy. Sugar in the blood can damage the small blood vessels in the retina. The vessels become unable to pass blood, leading to extra fluid in the eye and the growth of new blood vessels in the eye. These new blood vessels are weak and often bleed into the eye blocking vision. Both the fluid and the blood lead to blurry vision. Problems with blood vessels in the eye can also lead to glaucoma which results when eye pressure rises due to blocked fluids. All of these conditions can lead to permanent blindness. Once damaged, the eye may not be able to be repaired. This is why patients need to see an eye doctor to find any eye damage as early as possible in order to slow the progression of this eye disease.

Treatment

Most diabetics need regular examinations to diagnose and monitor the state of their eyes. Patients will need to have their eyes dilated so the eye doctor can see the small parts of the eye. Other tests include a series of special pictures of the eye and tests to determine your field-of-vision. Treatment consists of eye drops, laser treatments, and surgery in some cases. Diabetics are encouraged to keep their sugar levels in control and to manage their blood pressure level as well.
