Testing for Glaucoma

Glaucoma Testing and Treatment

Glaucoma is an eye disease that affects the optic nerves. Anyone can get it and there is no cure. However, because it is a progressive disease the effects can be halted or slowed if caught early enough. If left untreated, the condition may lead to blindness. This is why it is vital to receive regular testing, know your risk levels, and receive fast treatment by an ophthalmologist if you are diagnosed with glaucoma. Our eye doctors at Sylvester Eye Care in Oklahoma City are experienced in glaucoma testing and treatment.

What Are The Risk Factors For Glaucoma?

  • Age: People of all ages are at risk for glaucoma, however, the risk increases significantly after sixty.
  • Genetics: If you are related to someone with glaucoma you are up to six times more likely to get it. If you are of African American, Asian, or Hispanic descent you are more likely to have glaucoma and should start testing at an earlier age.
  • Diabetics: If you have diabetes you are more likely to get glaucoma at some point. Regular eye care and exams can decrease your risk of vision loss.
  • High Blood Pressure: If you have a condition that causes high blood pressure you may be at a higher risk for glaucoma.

Dr. Carl Sylvester, Dr. Deena Sylvester, and Dr. Salwa Khan are experts in their field. We can provide testing and treatment for glaucoma as well as a variety of other eye health conditions.

What Happens During Glaucoma Testing?

Proper glaucoma testing requires an eye exam that studies eye pressure, the optic nerve, side vision, the thickness of your cornea, and your eye's drainage angle. Dr. Sylvester is experienced in diagnosing the early signs of glaucoma. Some forms of glaucoma do not have symptoms, so it is important to come in for regular testing, especially if you are in a risk group.

If you have signs of glaucoma, we can provide treatment to halt or slow down the progression of the disease. Treatment may include prescription eye drops, medications, and surgery.
