Types of Surgery Offered
Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens in the eye. In cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced by an artificial lens called Intra-ocular lens (IOL). This minimally invasive procedure only takes about 15-30 minutes and is generally described as painless, low risk of complications, and very effective at improving quality of vision.
An added benefit is that patients can tailor their new vision to their lifestyle, choosing one of several IOL options that can minimize their need for glasses for distance or near viewing or both. Cataract Surgery
LASIK
If you are dependent on glasses or contact lenses, it is common to wonder if you are a candidate for laser vision correction. Sylvester Eye Care performs state-of-the-art “all-laser LASIK” using two lasers to alter the curvature of the cornea and better direct light into the eye thereby alleviating the need for glasses. Lasik surgery is a low risk, out-patient procedure that takes ~10 minutes and recovery is short, typically resulting in good vision within the first 24 hours. LASIK
PRK
Photo refractive keratectomy, or PRK surgery, also corrects nearsightedness and farsightedness for clearer vision by altering the shape of the cornea via laser. Clear contact lenses are temporarily worn during the healing process to help minimize any discomfort. PRK takes a mere few minutes to perform, and is a great corneal surgery option for patients with corneas too thin to undergo LASIK surgery.
Glaucoma Surgery
The most common symptom of glaucoma is elevated intraocular pressure. As with cataracts, your ophthalmologist will need to monitor the progression of your glaucoma to decide when surgery is required. Sylvester Eye Care and Aesthetics uses two different laser treatments to address glaucoma: 1) Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), which is a quick and painless in-office treatment that helps the eye’s aqueous fluid flow better through the drainage canals of the eye and thereby lowering the eye pressure. 2) Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI), where a laser creates a detour in the iris to allow the aqueous humor to move and clear away pupillary blockage in a specific type of glaucoma called “Narrow angle glaucoma”.
Additionally, there are two minimally invasive procedures, the iStent implant and laser EndoCycloPhotocoagulation (ECP), which your eye surgeon can perform at the same time as cataract surgery to lower eye pressure and help treat glaucoma.
Eyelid Surgery
If your eyelid shape is inhibiting your vision or if you just don’t like the appearance, look into our services including upper lid blepharoplasty, ectropion repair, and entropion repair. These procedures may help fix puffy skin or protrusive eyelid tissue. Eyelid Surgery
