LASIK Surgery: Post-Op Care

Many people have 20/20 vision without the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses after receiving LASIK surgery. Before you get surgery, you should know what to expect after the surgery is completed. Dr. Carl L. Sylvester, M.D., Deena Sylvester, and the rest of our team at Sylvester Eye Care & Aesthetics in Oklahoma City, OK, walk you through LASIK post-op care below.

You Need to See Your Eye Doctor Within 48 Hours

Before your surgery, you should schedule an appointment to see your eye doctor the day after your LASIK surgery. This way, the eye doctor can check to ensure there are no issues and that your eyes are healing normally.

What Your Eye Will Feel Like

It’s normal for your eyes to feel discomfort right after surgery. You may feel burning, soreness, or mild pain. Your eyes may water. Normal levels of light may seem incredibly bright.

Don’t Rub Your Eyes

When your eye hurts, it’s hard not to rub it. However, if you rub your eyes after LASIK surgery, you could damage them. Even if it hurts, do not rub your eyes.

What Your Eye Will Look Like

It’s normal for your eye to be bloodshot after LASIK surgery. That should go away in a few days.

Preventing Infection

Avoid using any creams or makeup near your eyes for one week after surgery to prevent infection. Do not use artificial eyelashes. You should not swim or use hot tubs or whirlpools also for 1 week.  You also need to use the prescribed antibiotic eyedrops as directed.

Playing Sports

You should not play contact sports for a month following surgery. Non-contact sports can be started after three days.

When to Contact an Eye Doctor

Some minor visual problems are normal for a few months after LASIK surgery. However, you should contact your eye doctor immediately if you feel severe pain or experience loss of vision.
