Recovering from Cataract Surgery
Cataracts are a common eye condition that often require surgery. This can be daunting, and many patients that undergo surgery for the first time are nervous. At Sylvester Eye Care in Oklahoma City, OK, we provide cataract surgery and will help you understand the surgery and the recovery process.
What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a clouding of the eye's lens, which obscures your vision. The symptoms of cataracts include:
- Double vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Night vision difficulty
- Blurry vision
In most cases, cataracts require surgery. Our our ophthalmologists, Carl Sylvester MD and Deena Sylvester, MD, will replace your natural eye lens with an intraocular lens (IOL). We offer a variety of IOLs for different needs and lifestyles.
How Long Does It Take to Recover from Cataract Surgery?
Short Term
You'll notice a significant change in your vision after surgery, but the healing process could take several months. Dr. Sylvester will prescribe antibiotic eye drops, corticosteroid eye drops, and NSAID eye drops to help your eye heal quickly and painlessly after surgery. Rest, take your medication, and protect your eyes. Follow the directions from our eye surgeon. Normal symptoms after surgery include watery eyes, redness, or blurriness. You should plan to have someone drive you home after your cataract surgery.
Long Term
You can expect your eyes to stabilize in about one month after the surgery. Your vision will be improved and you will be able to see clearly. Dr. Sylvester will test your eyes and determine if you need a new prescription. Complications are rare, but contact Dr. Sylvester right away if you experience persistent pain, loss of vision, nausea, or persistent coughing.
