5 Questions to Ask Your Cataract Surgeon Before Cataract Surgery

If you have eye cataracts, you may need surgery. While this can sound daunting, cataract surgery is simple and effective. At Sylvester Eye Care in Oklahoma City, OK, we provide cataract surgery in addition to a wide variety of other eye care services. Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Carl Sylvester M.D., will walk you through the procedure and the necessary post-surgery care.

What Is Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts occur when your eye lens becomes cloudy. Symptoms include blurry vision, seeing halos around lights, light sensitivity, double vision, and trouble seeing at night. Cataract surgery involves removing the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens. This will allow you to see clearly.

Does It Hurt?

No, cataract surgery is painless. Topical anesthetics are used to numb your eye. Dr. Sylvester will explain the process to you in detail before the surgery.

How Long Does the Surgery Take?

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can go home the same day. Dr. Sylvester will monitor you after the surgery to ensure everything goes smoothly. Cataract surgery itself usually takes less than one hour.

Am I Going to Need Medication?

Yes, you will be asked to take antibiotics both before and after the surgery to prevent infection. You will typically need corticosteroids after the surgery as well, to prevent inflammation.

What Should I Do after Surgery?

Dr. Sylvester will walk you through all the post-care steps before you have cataract surgery. As you leave, you may need to wear an eyepatch to shield your eye from the sun. You will need to wear a protective cover over your eye while sleeping to prevent anything from getting in the eye. Continue taking any medication our eye surgeon gives you. If you have any questions, Dr. Sylvester is happy to answer them.

What Is the Recovery Time?

Most of the discomfort associated with cataract surgery will disappear a few days after the surgery. Your vision will improve in a few days. However, it can take up to eight weeks for your eye to completely heal.
