Dr. Joy Ohara

Dr. Joy Ohara is a California native who graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry before attending University of California, Berkeley’s School of Optometry.  Dr. Ohara continued on to the University of Houston, College of Optometry (UHCO) and completed a residency in low vision.  While teaching at UHCO, she co-authored a paper that investigated eye movements in patients with bilateral central vision loss.

Dr. Ohara has demonstrated a life-long dedication to eye care.  In college, she worked as a technician in many Bay Area eye centers, including the Glaucoma Center of San Francisco.  In optometry school, she served as Vice President of her class and was actively involved in student association fundraisers.  Additionally, she founded the Ming Pow Low fund in memory of her former mother-in-law who was legally blind from a hereditary condition known as Retinitis Pigmentosa.  The Ming Pow Low fund now gives annual sponsorship to students pursuing study in low vision.  Dr. Ohara is back in California helping patients of all ages with their eye care needs.  In her free time, she loves learning about architecture and listening to NPR.
