General Information That I Need to Know if I'm Auditioning
- In 2019, teens and adults audition on the weekend of March 1-3. Youth ages 6-12 audition the following weekend, March 8-10. If you have a theatre resume and headshot, bring a set for each show that you are auditioning for.
- No experience is necessary to audition.
- When you arrive for your audition, please be sure to check in at the front registration table.
- You will then be given specific instructions as to your show's audition room.
*Please note that if you are late for your scheduled audition time, you may be moved to a later audition time.
Where am I headed for auditions?
- ALL auditions take place in the Art and Music Center on the campus of Aquinas College.
- Click HERE for a campus map.
- Look for #6 on the map to locate the building. We recommend entering campus from the Fulton Street entrance of campus, and parking in Lot #1, #7, or #9.
*Allow yourself plenty of time to arrive; plan on showing up at least 15-20 minutes before your scheduled audition time.
What I Need to Know and What to Expect if I'm Auditioning for a Play or Magic Circle
- At the audition, you will be asked to read from the script of the show for which you are auditioning.
- No prepared monologues will be necessary.
- All plays audition during the same weekend, however, they audition separately in different rooms.
- If you are auditioning for more than one play, please sign up for each play and allow enough time to attend each audition.
- It helps to let the Stage Manager or Director of each show know that you are auditioning for other shows.
- Therefore you may not be able to stay for the entire audition period.
- You can always come back to an audition that you have already read for if time allows.
Callbacks for Plays & Magic Circle
- Callbacks for Unnecessary Farce and Superior Donuts will be on the Sunday following auditions, March 3
- Check at your time of audition for specific callback times, or refer to the audition notices.
- If you are called back for a play, you will most likely receive a call that Friday or Saturday evening asking you to come in on Sunday at a specific callback time.
- Please note that not all Directors have callbacks. If you don't receive a call right away, it doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't being considered for the show.
- Check with the Stage Manager or Director of each show for specific callback details.
What I Need to Know and What to Expect if I'm Auditioning for a Musical
- All the musicals audition at one time, in the same room.
- This means that when you audition for a musical, you will be auditioning for all the musicals at one time.
- So even if you are auditioning for one show, you will be auditioning in front of all of the Directors of the musicals.
If you are auditioning for a musical you will be required to bring the following
- 16-32 bars of a prepared song.
- Sheet music for your prepared song.
- We will provide an accompanist/pianist.
- Singing a cappella or to a music track is not allowed.
- You may be cut off early while singing if the production team(s) have seen what they needed.
- You may not bring your own accompanist into the audition with you.
What you can expect when your name is called for your audition
- You will enter the room with approximately 9-10 other people.
- You will go up on stage and sing one at a time to sing.
- Once everyone has had a chance to sing, the choreographer will teach your entire group a dance combination/routine. (This pertains to Teen/Adult auditions only.)
- When you have finished the dance portion of the audition, you are free to go.
Attire
- Comfortable clothes and shoes.
- You will be required to learn a brief and simple dance routine so that the choreographers can get an idea of how well you move.
Callbacks for Musicals - Adults and Teens
- Callbacks for the musicals will late Saturday afternoon (Hands On A Hardbody), Sunday morning (Freaky Friday), and Sunday evening (Joseph... Dreamcoat).
- Check at your time of audition for specific callback times, or refer to the audition notices.
- If you are called back for a musical, you will most likely receive a call that Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening asking you to come in at a specific callback time.
- Please note that not all Directors have callbacks. So if you don't receive a call right away, it doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't being considered for the show.
- Check with the Stage Manager or Director of each show for specific callback details.
What I Need to Know and What to Expect if I'm Auditioning for a Concert
- All the concerts audition at one time.
- This means that when you audition for a concert, you will be auditioning for all the concerts at one time.
- So even if you are auditioning for one show, you will be auditioning for all of the Directors of the concerts.
If you are auditioning for a concert you will be required to bring the following
- TWO contrasting pieces of music, 16-32 bars of each.
- Sheet music for your prepared songs.
- We will provide an accompanist/pianist.
- Singing a cappella or to a music track is not allowed.
- You may accompany yourself if you play an instrument.
What you can expect when your name is called for your audition
- You will enter the room with approximately 9-10 other people.
- You will go up on stage and sing one at a time to sing.
- You may be asked if you can dance or "move". Some concerts have small choreographed highlights in the show. Some Directors may have a short callback for movement and dance.
- You may be cut off early while singing if the production team(s) have seen what they needed.
- You may not bring your own accompanist into the audition with you.
Attire
- Be comfortable and presentable; this is a great opportunity to show the concert Directors who you are as a artist.
FAQs About the Auditioning For/Participating In a Concert
Do we rehearse as long as what the musicals do?
No. Concerts usually rehearse for 1-4 weeks before the opening night of a Concert, and rehearsal schedules vary. For later performances of the concerts, there is usually a “pick-up” rehearsal to freshen-up and re-learn anything that’s needed, and then a tech rehearsal with the full band, sound, and lights, on the two days before the performances.
Can I be in a play or a musical and also be rehearsing for a concert at the same time?
That’s a tricky one! We recommend that you look at our Conflict Calendar. If you have already been cast in a play or musical, you MUST have those rehearsal and performance dates noted on your conflict calendar when you audition for the concert(s).
Is it possible for me to participate in more than one concert this season?
Absolutely; the concert rehearsal schedules should not overlap in a way that limits participation in more than one concert.
Do I have to play an instrument?
Absolutely not! If you DO play an instrument we’d love to know, and you’re welcome to bring it and accompany yourself. However, it does not necessarily give you an advantage towards being cast over those who do not play an instrument.
Are concert performers paid?
No; all actors/singers at Circle Theatre - from performers in the plays, musicals, Magic Circle family show, Season Kickoff, to the Summer Concert Series - are all all volunteers.
How old do you need to be to audition for the concerts?
Traditionally, our concerts have been cast with people in their late teens and up; however, we’re opening up our concert auditions this year to teens and tweens to show us what they’ve got! Youth/Teens may be considered for the Imagine and 21st Century Broadway concerts.
