Dry Eyes

Dry eye syndrome is a condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep the surface of the eye lubricated. If left untreated, dry eye can cause ulcers, inflammation, pain, irritation, blurry vision, and scars on the cornea. Along with that, the condition can make activities like reading, using a computer, or watching tv challenging. Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

The two leading causes of dry eye syndrome include low-quality tears and decreased tear production. Your eyes may produce low-quality tears due to the following:

    • Eye allergies
    • Clogged eyelid glands
    • Preservatives in eye drops
    • Eyelids turning inwards or outwards
    • Blinking less often due to prolonged screen use

The causes of decreased tear production include:

    • Aging
    • Hormones, especially in women following menopause
    • Medical conditions like allergic eye disease, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and Vitamin A deficiencies
    • Medications like antihistamines, decongestants, antipsychotics, diuretics, and drugs for high blood pressure

Treatment for Dry Eye

Immediate medical attention isn’t necessary for dry eye if your symptoms are manageable with artificial tears. However, a variety of medications are available to treat dry eye syndrome. Our optometrists can assess your condition and help determine which medication can provide you with relief. Some treatments prevent tears from evaporating and others improve tear quality. Some of these treatments include:

    • Autologous blood serum drops can be helpful if other medications have not been effective
    • Medications, such as eye inserts, can be placed between your lid and eye to stimulate tear production. The insert will dissolve and release lubrication directly into your eyes.
    • Antibiotics can be taken orally or inserted directly into your eyes in drop or ointment form. Some eye drops can treat swelling or inflammation because they contain suppressing medications.

Our optometrists may also utilize light therapy, eye massage therapy, specialized contact lenses, and help unplug your oil glands improve with the tear quality. We will perform an eye exam to determine a diagnosis and provide prompt treatment.
