Diabetic Retinopathy Basics

When diabetic retinopathy first begins, many patients might not have any noticeable symptoms. Some have some mild symptoms at this stage. However, this eye disease can get worse over time, and the patient may eventually start to have symptoms that cause significant changes to their vision. If diabetic retinopathy continues to progress, it can cause the patient to go blind. This condition can be found in those who have either type 1 or type 2 diabetes. It is more common in those who have had diabetes for a number of years. It's also more likely in those who don't have good control over their blood sugar. Anyone with diabetic eyes should be monitored regularly for this complication of diabetes.

Symptoms of Diabetic Retinopathy

After beginning with no symptoms, over time symptoms will start to show themselves. There is a variety of symptoms that may begin and eventually get worse. Some of the symptoms include blurry vision, having a loss of vision, seeing floaters, and having dark areas in your vision. Diabetes should be carefully managed so that you will be at a lower risk for this serious eye disease. Careful management can help to preserve your vision when diabetic retinopathy could take much of it away. If you have diabetic eyes, be sure to get your annual eye exam from an eye doctor, even if you don't have symptoms of the disease. It could be in its early stage. If you have diabetes during a pregnancy, it may also important to be checked for this condition. If you are noticing hazy vision, spots, or blurred vision, call our optometry office for an appointment.
