(302) 993-0722If you have been looking into ways to improve the appearance of your eyes or fight the signs of aging you may have heard about blepharoplasty but have more questions. Not only about how it can help and how much treatment might cost but even more basically, what is it and how will it affect your life.
Blepharoplasty is a surgery performed on eyelids that droop excessively due to aging skin losing its elasticity and firmness. While many people consider it a purely cosmetic procedure many people may also need it as part of full vision care. Lower eyelid skin can sag or develop dark circles without interfering with vision, upper eyelids that sag over the corners or above the eyes can significantly impede the ability to see clearly. Although blepharoplasty does not eliminate crow's feet or dark circles under the eyes, it can also be used in conjunction with forehead lifts, dermal filler injections or laser skin resurfacing to improve facial aesthetics.
Eyelid surgery is a minimally invasive procedure involving application of a local anesthetic to numb the eyelids. For patients nervous about their blepharoplasty, a mild sedative may be provided by their doctor. After eyelids are completely numb, the doctor makes tiny incisions along the creases of the eyelids to trim excess skin and fat deposits, if necessary. Once unwanted tissue is removed, the surgeon then closes the sutures with stitches that eventually dissolve. A typical blepharoplasty procedure takes under one hour to complete.
Following eyelid surgery, you will be prescribed lubricating ointment to facilitate healing and prevent dryness around sutures. To reduce swelling and bruising, cold compresses may be applied periodically. Rarely do eyelid surgery patients experience anything but minimal to no discomfort after a blepharoplasty procedure. Complete healing of eyelids occurs within three to four weeks of surgery.
Many blepharoplasty patients are older men and women who wish to look better around the eyes and see without interference from drooping skin. Although eyelid surgery is a highly successful treatment for sagging eyelids, it is not a permanent solution, since skin will continue to age and lose firmness. However, blepharoplasty procedures can be repeated as long as you are in good health.
