If you have ever been told that contact lenses don't fit for you, you might not feel very good about it. However, this doesn't mean that you will never be able to wear contacts. Our eye doctor offers specialty contacts lenses for patients with a variety of eye disorders including:

• Astigmatism
• Dry eye
• Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC)
• Keratoconus
• Presbyopia

Contacts are usually soft lenses but if you can't wear these types of contacts due to having any of the above eye disorders, our eye doctor may need to fit you with either gas permeable (GP) or rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses. These types of specialty contact lenses are made from a hard, oxygen permeable material that is more comfortable to wear for patients with certain eye problems. Depending on your eye disorder, our optometrist might also recommend daily disposable lenses. If you have astigmatism, you may need toric lenses or RGP lenses.

If you have an irregular-shaped cornea, you may be able to wear scleral lenses, which are a type of GP lens that fits over the corneal surface and rests on the white part of the eye. These lenses are larger than normal contact lenses, but they are just as comfortable. If you have other conditions of the cornea, including keratoconus or severe ocular surface disease, scleral lenses may be the only option.

If you have a condition called progressive myopia, you may benefit from orthokeratology, which is commonly referred to as ortho-k. This is when the optometrist needs to reshape the contour of the cornea, which can be done by wearing specialty GP lenses at night and soft contact lenses during the day. Ortho-k is also helpful for those who have dry eye or large pupils.
