Orthokeratology

What is Orthokeratology?

It is a non-surgical procedure that uses custom designed contact lenses to re-shape a front curvature of the eye(cornea).  These lenses are worn shape of cornea to see clearly during the day.  It is very similar to wearing dental retainers to correct misaligned teeth.

How do Ortho-K lenses work?

Ortho-K uses a series of therapeutic contact lenses to apply gentle pressure to the front curvature of the eye to reshape and to improve nearsightedness and astigmatism.  A layer of tear film underneath the contact lenses creates natural suction force to help shape the cornea.

Is it Safe?

The lenses are fitted so that they do not physically press on the eye in a harmful way.

It is safe and very effective for controlling nearsightedness.

The lenses are made of FDA approved materials that allow oxygen to pass through easily which makes it safe to be worn while sleeping.

Am I a good candidate?

Ortho-K is appropriate for all ages.

It is ideal for patients with mild to moderate nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The lenses can be extremely beneficial preventing nearsightedness from getting worse, especially for children.

The results of Ortho-K can be permanent if you continue to wear these lenses, otherwise your improved eyesight could slowly return to your original refractive power, or close to it.  Patients with severe nearsightedness and astigmatism still benefit by improving their vision, but may require some vision correction after the treatment.
