Orthokeratology: FAQ

Orthokeratology: FAQ

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) is a non-surgical procedure used to treat astigmatism, farsightedness, nearsightedness, and presbyopia. While asleep, patients wear contact lenses designed specifically for the shape of their eyes. These therapeutic lenses reshape the eye, allowing the patient to see clearly during waking hours, without the use of corrective lenses. From routine eye exams to vision therapy and orthokeratology, Eastgate Optometric Clinic of Stoney Creek and Hamilton can help you determine the proper treatment protocol for all your eye care needs.

Are There Age Restrictions?

The FDA has deemed this procedure safe and effective for patients of all ages. In fact, studies indicate Ortho-K treatment can reduce the chances of a young patient’s nearsightedness worsening. Additionally, it’s an excellent alternative for active children who wear glasses or contacts.

Who’s a Good Candidate?

Orthokeratology has proven effective in treating astigmatic, nearsighted, and farsighted patients, particularly those with a prescription between +2.00 and -6.00, with surface astigmatism of -1.75 or less. Ideal candidates also include:

  • Active patients
  • Patients who have experienced difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Patients whose careers require superior vision without the use of corrective lenses

I Have Dry Eyes. Is That Ok?

Since Ortho-K lenses are worn while you sleep, patients with dry eyes are typically ideal candidates for this non-surgical procedure. If your dry eyes are a result of collagen-vascular disease or severe arthritis, your optometrist will want to conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine your eligibility for Ortho-K lenses.

How Long Does It Take?

Most patients notice improvement within the first few days, achieving optimum vision within two weeks.

Is It Permanent?

If you discontinue wearing the lenses, your vision will return to its normal state in as little as 3 days.

Is It Painful?

Much like regular contacts, you may sense the lens is present. The treatment, however, should not cause any pain or soreness.
