Hard to Fit Contacts

.

For many people getting their first pair of contacts after wearing glasses is a rite of passage, but not everyone can wear contacts easily. Some are fine at first but develop conditions like Dry eye, Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis, or Astigmatism that lead to extra difficulty wearing traditional contacts and demand a new approach to eye care. At Beach Vision in New Smyrna Beach, FLmultifocal our Doctor of Optometry near Ponce Inlet and Edgewater, Florida has a solution with hard to fit contacts from our optometrist.

Why You May Need Hard to Fit Contacts

There are several conditions that once disqualified people from wearing contact lenses, but have since become not only possible but in many instanced hard to fit contacts are preferable to glasses in order to provide the best vision and can even be beneficial to your overall eye care. Some conditions that are candidates for hard to fit lenses include

  • Dry Eyes - A condition where eyes become dry and irritated because of the eyes' inability to make quality tears.
  • Giant Papillary Conjunctivitis (GPC) - a condition where the inner surface of the eyelid is inflamed and bumps form inside the eyelid. It's usually caused by wearing regular contacts
  • Keratoconus - Thinning of the corneas that cause the eye to bulge in a cone shape
  • Astigmatism - Also a misshaping of the cornea, to a lesser degree that causes vision distortion.
  • Presbyopia - a condition where nearsighted people, usually over 40 develop issues seeing objects close up due to aging.

How Hard to Fit Contacts Can Help

If you suffer from eye conditions that make wearing traditional contacts difficult or impossible, it is a good idea to seek out specialty care from your optometrist who can help you address your issue and provide you with the eye care you need.

If you have dry eyes, we may prescribe eye drops to help you manage your symptoms, but we may also give you the option to wear hydrogel lenses which have a higher water content to keep eyes from drying out. Scleral lenses with a large diameter that covers the whole eye is another option for those with dry eye as well. These lenses are more suspended over the eye to prevent drying.

Since astigmatism is the result of irregularly shaped corneas, toric lenses that don't rotate are often used in order to correct vision. With presbyopia, there is the option of bifocal or multi focal contacts. Another option is to have two different types of lenses, for near and far vision in each eye.

If you've had a hard time wearing contacts for any of these reasons, there's a chance that these hard to fit contacts can have you seeing things in a whole new way. To learn more, or to schedule an appointment, contact us at Beach Vision in New Smyrna Beach, FL at 386-423-7788.
