Astigmatism Correcting IOLs

Toric IOLs

Toric IOLs are designed to compensate for corneal astigmatism. Prior to their invention surgeons would have to try to reduce astigmatism with incisions on the corneal surface. This was often inaccurate and could not correct anything but very low levels of astigmatism. Very often patients would have to wear glasses or contacts after surgery to correct their risudual astigmatism. The advent of toric IOLs has dramatically changed this and many patients with higher amounts for astigmatism can enjoy much more independence from corrective lenses after their procedure.
