Eye Exam in Killeen

Particularly if you don’t have a history of vision problems, it may not even cross your mind to visit an optometrist for an eye exam. Just like the checkups you receive from your doctor, though, routine eye exams are an essential part of maintaining your overall health. That’s true even if you’ve recently passed a vision screening provided by your school or in the workplace, and it’s an important checkup to get for kids as well.

When to Get an Eye Exam

Recommendations are to have your child’s vision checked by an eye doctor when they're about six months old, at the age of three, and once more before starting first grade. If issues are detected during any of those early visits, our optometrist may recommend more frequent checkups. This is especially important for children, as their eyes are still growing and learning to work together, and so their vision can change over time.

For older children and adults without any history of vision problems, having a routine eye exam performed once a year is ideal. Precisely what you can expect during your child’s eye exam will vary a bit depending on their age. Our optometrists have experience working with children, and so strive to make the experience as fun and stress-free as possible.

What Our Eye Doctors Test for

Regardless of age, our eye doctor will check to see how well both eyes work together during the exam, as well as how clearly you can see things up close and far away. They’ll check for normal color vision also, and they’ll explore your peripheral field of vision. For older patients, intraocular pressure may be tested to look for early warning signs of glaucoma, and we’ll also discuss any issues you’ve been having to determine if they indicate the presence of another underlying medical condition.

The Importance of an Annual Eye Exam

Healthy eyes and good vision are essential to your ability to live a full and active life, but your eyesight is only part of what routine vision screenings protect. In fact, our optometrist can detect early warning signs of a number of other medical conditions by examining your eyes, including diabetes and high blood pressure. There are also some conditions that can damage your vision permanently and that have few or no early warning symptoms, but that can be diagnosed through a routine eye exam.
