Cataracts

Cataract Treatment at First Eye Care

Cataracts are a common eye problem that causes poor vision. More than 24 million people over the age of 40 in the United States have cataracts; this works out to about one in six Americans. Cataracts can affect the way you see. Fortunately, eye doctors can diagnose and treat cataracts.

This condition affects the lens of your eye. Like the lens of a camera, your eye’s lens makes images clearer. Cataracts make your lens cloudy and blur the images.

Types Of Cataracts

Cataracts are most common in people over the age of 60, although a person can develop cataracts at age.

There are different types of cataracts:

  • Age-related cataracts, which develop as you get older
  • Congenital, which is when a baby is born with cataracts
  • Secondary, when cataracts develop as the result of another problem, such as diabetes
  • Traumatic, which are associated with eye injuries

Some factors can increase your risk for developing cataracts. These risk factors include cigarette smoke, air pollution, and drinking alcohol.

Cataracts develop when protein builds up in the lens of your eye. This protein buildup clouds your lens to interfere with the images you see.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Symptoms of cataracts often develop slowly, so you may not realize you have an eye problem until the cataracts have progressed to an advanced stage. Once you do notice changes in your vision, your symptoms might include:

  • Vision that seems cloudy, foggy, blurry, or even filmy
  • Nearsightedness, which means that you cannot see far very well
  • Changes in the way you see color
  • Problems driving at night, such as experiencing glare from oncoming headlights
  • Problems with glare during daylight house
  • Double vision in one eye
  • No real benefit from wearing glasses or contacts

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cataracts

Our eye doctors can help you prevent, manage and treat cataracts. Our eye doctor will perform an eye exam and tests to detect signs of cataracts. The tests may require dilation of your pupil so the eye doctor can check the lens.

If your cataracts do not bother you, treatment may not be necessary. Treatment for cataracts usually includes surgery to replace the cloudy lens with a clear one.
