Who Should be Tested?

Anyone can be at risk for glaucoma, including infants, who are sometimes born with the disease. Glaucoma is also common in senior adults and African-Americans. We recommend having a glaucoma screening during your annual eye exams or if you are experiencing a significant change in vision.

What are Some Signs of Glaucoma?

Glaucoma causes vision loss, however, it’s often mild in the beginning and those that may be affected might not realize their sight is declining. Some may notice a difference in their vision, but may attribute the changes to aging rather than an eye disease. Since glaucoma can lead to blindness, it’s important to be tested, especially if you are experiencing symptoms like blurry vision or seeing halos around lights. Even if you are not exhibiting symptoms, we recommend visiting us annually to be tested and to receive treatment if necessary.

Tests Performed

Our optometrists may perform several tests to check for glaucoma. Some of these tests include the following:

  • Pupil Dilation: Dilating your eyes, which will widen your pupil and allow our optometrists to see the optical nerve more clearly
  • Pachymetry: A pachymetry test lets our optometrists check the thickness of your cornea
  • Visual Field Test: A visual field test is performed to check your peripheral vision
  • Tonometry: A tonometry test is administered to measure the intraocular pressure of your eye

These tests are non-invasive and are typically performed during your regular exam. While these tests are simple, they are effective at detecting glaucoma in its earliest stages, which is when it is easiest to treat.
