Today is World Sight Day!  This is a day set aside by WHO in the year 2000 to spread awareness of avoidable blindness and vision impairment.  Most vision impairment can be treated or prevented if detected early.

The theme this year is Eye Care Everywhere.  Thanks to groups like the Lions Club and other organizations, many places around the world are provided with eye care they wouldn't receive otherwise.  There is still a lot to do.

Does that affect those in Midland, TX?  It most certainly does!  Diabetes is very prevalent in the West Texas population.  Diabetic retinopathy is a common problem for those with diabetes.  This includes areas in the retina where there is bleeding or leaking of the small vessels in the eye, and sometimes edema (swelling) of the macula.  Annual dilated eye exams are an important part of caring for diabetic patients.

Glaucoma and cataracts are other diseases that cause blindness but can be treated.

Our doctors are able to diagnose and treat many of these conditions.  Be sure to schedule your annual exam!
