January is Glaucoma Awareness Month. Glaucoma in its early stages often has no symptoms. In fact, 2.2 million Americans have glaucoma, but half of them don't know they have it. When caught early, severe vision loss can often be prevented. Once damage occurs, however, there is no recovering the vision that is lost.
Our doctors are able to diagnose and treat glaucoma. There are many factors that play a role in this disease, and analyzing those is a part of every comprehensive exam performed in our office. In addition to visual field tests, we are able to perform OCT scans to help monitor progression or change when glaucoma is suspected or diagnosed.
This is another reason we encourage everyone, even those who have great 20/20 vision, to schedule regular examinations.
