Macular degeneration is a leading cause of irreversible blindness and visual impairment in the world, with 11 million Americans having some form of age-related macular degeneration.  Once damage occurs to the macula, it is irreversible. ARMD impairs a person's central "straight ahead" vision.

An optometrist can determine what form of ARMD  patient has.  Over 90% of ARMD is the dry form.  Risk factors include being over the age of 65, and having a family history of the disease.  Our doctors are able to detect ARMD, and when it is suspected will often run an OCT scan to better diagnose and follow each patient

There are things lifestyle habits than can help reduce the risk of developing macular degeneration.

These include:

--not smoking

--exercise

--maintaining a healthy weight

--eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables (especially leafy greens)  and fish

--protecting eyes from UV with hats and sunglasses

Let our optometrists check those West Texas eyes for macular changes today.
