Diagnostic Capabilities

At the Macula & Retina Institute in Los Angeles and Glendale, Dr. Kent W. Small can accurately diagnose retinal problems in their earliest stages, when there are no outward symptoms. Early diagnosis means early treatment, which is the best way to preserve your vision and reduce severe complications that can occur. Dr. Small’s office is equipped with the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including the latest technology for optical coherence tomography (OCT). Also, Dr. Small is one of only a few retinal specialists in and around Los Angeles to offer electrophysiology testing (ERG and VEP).

Dr. Small's other diagnostic capabilities include:

  • Fluorescein & indocyanine green (ICG) angiography
  • Fundus photography
  • Scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO)
  • Ultrasound A & B scans
  • Visual field testing
  • Microperimetry
  • Multi-Focal and Full Field Electroretinography (ERG)
  • Visual Evoked Potential (VEP)

Once your exam is complete, Dr. Small will take the time to go over the results with you so you have a complete understanding of your current eye health. If he determines that you need specialized retinal care, he will thoroughly explain the recommended treatment. Dr. Small also coordinates your care with primary-care physicians, general ophthalmologists, optometrists and other medical specialists to ensure the best possible outcomes.
