CFH and ARMS2 genetic risk determines progression to neovascular age-related macular degeneration after antioxidant and zinc supplementation

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of severe vision loss in the elderly and has major economic and quality-of-life impact. Although the exact causes of AMD are not fully understood, numerous studies have shown that antioxidant vitamins and zinc may reduce the effects of AMD in some people with the disease. Recently, Dr. Small and colleagues published a manuscript discussing the importance the AREDS vitamins which are part of the same formula for vitamins we recommend for patients in our offices. Our analyses of the most comprehensive collection of AREDS data and DNA to date show that the risk of progression from intermediate to neovascular AMD is significantly altered by AREDS formulation treatment. We understand that the response to AREDS formulation treatment varies substantially among individuals, based on CFH and ARMS2 genetic risk. Among people at high risk for late-stage macular degeneration (those with intermediate AMD in both eyes or advanced AMD in one eye), a dietary supplement of vitamins C, E, and beta-carotene, along with zinc, lowered the risk of the disease progressing to advanced stages by about 25% to 30%. Zinc is only recommended for certain individuals and Dr. Small will inform you if you it. If you would like to learn more about our findings and research, please read the article below or feel free to call our office and speak with our Clinical Research Coordinator, Fadi Shaya
