State of the Art Technology for Advanced Eye Care

At the Eye Care Center, preserving and enhancing our patient’s vision is our number one priority. Our office utilizes the most state-of-the-art technology available today in order to give our patients the best results and advantages both visually and medically. Here are some examples of the newest technology that we have available:

Corneal Topography:

This is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface curvature of the cornea. Since the cornea is normally responsible for some 70% of the eye's refractive power, its topography is of critical importance in determining the quality of vision. The three-dimensional map is therefore can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of conditions such as keratoconus. It is a vital test in planning refractive surgery such as LASIK. It is also helpful in designing the fit of contact lenses. The procedure is carried out in seconds and is completely painless.

Corneal Pachymetry:

This is the process of measuring the thickness of the cornea utilizing ultrasound or Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT). Corneal thickness, as measured by corneal pachymetry, is an important predictor of glaucoma development when combined with standard measurements of intraocular pressure and is widely used to better diagnose and detect early cases of glaucoma. Corneal Pachymetry is also particularly essential prior to considering refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK. This test helps ensure there is sufficient corneal thickness to prevent abnormal degeneration of the cornea, a side effect known as ectasia.

Threshold Visual Field Testing:

This is the systematic measurement of differential light sensitivity in the visual field of an eye by the detection of the presence of test targets on a defined background. The most sophisticated form of visual field testing utilizes dedicated computerized instrument called a threshold perimeter. Threshold perimetry is used to detect and follow visual field deficits called scotomas. This testing is important in the screening, diagnosing, and monitoring of various eye diseases such as glaucoma, optic nerve disease and retinal disease. It is also useful in identifying brain disorders affecting the visual pathway such as tumors and strokes.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT):

New diagnostic testing technology called Cirrus High Definition Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT was also added by Eye Care Center. This technology utilizes near-infrared light to produce highly detailed three-dimensional views of the retina and the optic nerve. This innovation in testing technology allows much earlier and more accurate diagnosis of conditions like macular degeneration, macular edema, macular holes and glaucoma.

TearLab:

TearLab tear osmolarity testing was another innovative technology added to the Eye Care Center’s dry eye management capabilities. This test utilizes a microchip to analyze a small sample of patient tears to determine the osmolarity of the tear. This assists in objectively determining the level of dry eye a patient has. It is also used to monitor the amount of improvement derived from dry eye treatments.

Electronic Health Records:

The Eye Care Center began a quest to become a totally electronic and paperless health care facility over ten years ago and have worked with this technology since that time. This EHR combines all of the electronic diagnostic testing along with manually entered patient data and it allows electronic communication and more effective patient education.

With the addition of new technologies that allow the practice to providing cutting-edge testing to both the patient’s eye health and visual needs, and the support of some of the newest and most technologically advanced products in lens technologies available today, the Eye Care Center leads its profession in employing innovation in technology to help our patients better preserve and enhance their vision for life.
