Computers Vision

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

If you are like many people living and working here today in Springfield, there is a good chance that you rarely go a day without looking at a screen. However, you need to know about the harm it can do to your eyes and how you can treat it. Our optometry team at The Eye Health Group provides quality eye care to all residents in the Springfield area, including Computer Vision Syndrome.

.

If you have never heard of Computer Vision Syndrome, also known as CVS, that is because it is relatively new as far as human afflictions go. In fact, most optometry and eye care professionals have only started paying close attention to it in recent years, as the number of people experiencing CVS has risen along with the spike in the technology used in our everyday lives. As its name suggests, this often painful eye syndrome correlates to spending long hours in front of computer screens. Nevertheless, CVS can also result from staring at tablet screens, smartphones, and even modern TVs.

Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome

While CVS can affect individuals differently, symptoms include:

  • Eye pain or stinging
  • Headaches
  • Dry eyes
  • Redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

The good news is that CVS is considered a temporary condition that can be treated. That said, it is worth noting that it is still relatively new, and not much is known about potential lasting damage. If you find yourself constantly around screens or already experiencing symptoms of CVS, it is important to seek proper eye care quickly.

How Can Our Optometrist Treat Computer Vision Syndrome and Prevent Future Conditions?

There are a few different ways our eye care experts can help ease your CVS symptoms as well as prevent new flare-ups. For example, we have a variety of lens options that can help specifically to combat Computer Vision Syndrome. Blue-light filtering lenses reduce the amount of sharp bright light reaching your eyes from your screen, and anti-reflective lenses also help to reduce glare.

Additionally, we recommend giving yourself breaks during long screen sessions and trying to sit further away from the monitor (and holding handheld screens further back). Remind yourself to blink often. Turning down the screen brightness and/or switching to nighttime mode may also help.
