Orthokeratology

If you have myopia, also known as nearsightedness, orthokeratology is a potential treatment option. It allows you to correct your vision without having to wear glasses or contacts during the day. At The Eye Doctors, in Havertown, PA, we offer orthokeratology treatment.

Orthokeratology

What Is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology is a way of treating myopia. Rather than wearing vision correction lenses during the day, you'll wear specially designed contact lenses while you sleep at night.

This temporarily corrects your vision, so you don't need eyeglasses or contacts during the day. You will need to wear your orthokeratology lenses each night, however.

How Does Orthokeratology Work?

Orthokeratology works by temporarily correcting the cause of your myopia. Myopia is caused by your cornea, the clear lens at the front of your eye, being misshapen.

Myopia means that when light enters your eye, it isn't reflected onto your retina, or back of your eye, correctly. This causes your vision to be blurry, particularly when you are looking at things in the distance. Glasses and contacts correct your vision by changing the way the light is reflected onto the retina so that your vision is clearer.

Orthokeratology lenses correct the shape of your cornea. The lens is firm and gradually changes the shape of your cornea while you sleep. When you wake up, you remove the lenses, and your cornea stays properly shaped.

Your lens will go back to its former shape if you don't continue to wear your Orthokeratology lenses. If you wear them nightly, however, your vision will remain clear throughout the day.

The Orthokeratology Treatment Process

Treatment will likely begin with an eye exam. One aspect of this eye exam is mapping the cornea. Our optometrist will use the map of your cornea to customize your orthokeratology lenses so they are designed for your eyes.

It may take some time to get used to the lenses, particularly if you haven’t worn contacts before. A member of our team can teach you how to put them on, take them off, and how to clean them properly.
