What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a film that forms on the lens of your eye that makes your vision cloudy. In the early stages, it may just be a small area of your lens, and it may not be very disruptive. As the cataract grows and gets bigger and thicker, it becomes harder to see at night. You may have a big problem with halos around bright lights and colors may have lost their vividness. It becomes harder to read, and you may have to use brighter lights in your home. When it gets bad enough to bother you, it is time to get the cataract removed.  You may only have cataracts in one eye, or you may have them in both eyes. They are rarely at the same stage. Only one will be done at a time, usually at least a few weeks apart.

Cataract Surgery

Not every ophthalmologist is an eye surgeon, so you will need to find one or be referred to one who specializes in cataract surgery. You will have a visit with the eye surgeon before your surgery. He will discuss the procedure, tell you all the things you need to do pre-surgery and post-surgery, and he will examine and measure your eye. You will also discuss the type of lens that you prefer and what corrections you prefer to your vision. Your medications will be discussed, and you may be asked not to take any for a certain number of days before your surgery.

On the day of your surgery, you will be asked not to eat for 6 hours before the surgery. The lens is removed with local anesthesia, and you will have to rest for about 30 minutes after the procedure. You will need someone to come with you to drive you home. You will likely be given eye drops after surgery and will have a follow-up appointment in a few weeks. You will need to limit your exercise for a week or so but your eye surgeon will give you a sheet with directions when you leave the office.
