The Differences Between Cataracts and Glaucoma

Eyes are something that most people take for granted until they begin to have trouble seeing. Both glaucoma and cataracts are eye conditions that can lead to loss of vision. Both are also associated with aging eyes. However, they are very different in the way they affect vision and how they are treated. If you are worried that your vision is being affected by either glaucoma or a cataract, Dr. Aghai at Century Eye Care Medical can detect and treat both conditions. If you live in or around Hawthorne or Gardena, contact our office for an appointment.

Parts of the Eye Affected

Cataracts affect the lens of the eye. A cloudy spot develops, often very slowly, and can take years to become a major problem. You may develop a cataract in one eye or both eyes. They grow independently and may not need to be dealt with at the same time.

Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve. Pressure builds up inside the eyeball and if it goes untreated it can cause permanent damage.

The Causes of Glaucoma and Cataracts

Cataracts are usually caused by aging or an eye injury. You may also have a genetic predisposition. Some medical conditions such as diabetes can increase the likelihood of developing a cataract.

Glaucoma is caused by the buildup of fluid in the eyes. It causes increased pressure in the eye due to the fluid not draining correctly. It usually happens in those over 40 and may be more likely due to an eye injury, heredity, or being African American.

Treatment

With cataracts, when your vision is severely impaired the lens is removed with eye surgery and a new lens is implanted by an ophthalmologist.

Glaucoma is most often treated with eye drops to control eye pressure.
