Farmington Vision is committed to providing the highest quality care in order to ensure that your eyes are healthy and taken care of for your entire life. To help us achieve our goal, our office utilizes Optomap Ultra-Widefield imaging to allow us to get a complete view of your ocular health. Our eye doctors recommend screenings on all patients as part of their comprehensive examination but may also utilize your images for special interpretations and procedures to better evaluate your eye conditions.
Optomap is a non-invasive, imaging tool that allows us to view the retina, optic nerve, and other tissues of the eye. This advanced imaging helps your doctor to diagnose eye conditions and direct his or her treatment decisions. It also allows us to create a permanent record of your eye that can be used for future comparison and can aid in detection of important eye diseases that may arise between examinations. Many ocular conditions do not have symptoms until vision loss has occurred and traditional examination techniques and equipment can leave these undetected. Additionally, many of the first signs of diseases such as stroke, diabetes, or even cancers can be seen in your eye before symptoms occur.
Traditional imaging technologies allow only approximately 15% of the retina to be viewed on one image while Optomap Ultra-Widefield imaging allows for over 80% of your retina to be viewed by your doctor at one time! Early detection and treatment of disease is of utmost importance for your sight and health. Optomap is an essential part of a comprehensive eye exam for patients at every age and our doctors will always review these images with you during your examination.
Fundus auto-fluorescence or FAF is a technique available with
Optomap imaging that your doctor may utilize. This type of image
provides important information about the deepest layers of the
retina; the RPE, which controls the elimination of waste products in
the retina, and the photoreceptor layer, which converts light into
vision. Fundus auto-fluorescence allows early diagnosis of retinal
problems such as macular degeneration and retinal dystrophies in
adults and children. Early diagnosis allows intervention and the best
possible treatment of sight-threatening conditions.
- Visual Field Testing
Visual field testing may be ordered by
your doctor to evaluate your peripheral or central vision. Your
“visual field” is everything that your eye can see when it is
focused on a single point including the vision in the center, top,
bottom, and side to side. This type of testing can be used to not
only diagnose, treat, and monitor many ocular conditions, but also
many neurologic conditions and medication side effects.
Common conditions which may utilize
visual field testing by your doctor:
- Glaucoma
- Macular Degeneration (Wet and Dry)
- Brain Tumors
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Stroke
- Pituitary gland disorders
- Central Nervous System Disorders
Our office utilizes Zeiss Humphrey 750i Field Analyzer Automated Perimetry to evaluate your visual field.
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Optical coherence tomography or OCT is an advanced imaging diagnostic technology that your doctor may use to evaluate the individual layers of your retina and choroid (or the blood supply to the eye). The procedure is similar to an ultrasound except light waves are used instead of sound waves to provide your doctor with high resolution images of the individual layers of your eye. The procedure is painless, non-invasive, and takes less than 30 seconds to per eye to take a “picture.” Your doctor may utilize OCT to diagnose and manage conditions such as:
- Macular Degeneration (Wet and Dry), Glaucoma, Retinal Dystrophies, Medication Side Effects, Retinal Tumors, Retinal Holes/Retinal Detachments, Diabetic Retinopathy, High Blood Pressure
In addition to monitoring the health of the deep layers of your eye, OCT technology may also be used by your doctor to fit your eye with a specialty contact lens or to monitor corneal dystrophies or disorders such as keratoconus where the front layers of the eye may begin to thin. Our office utilizes Zeiss Cirrus 5000 HD-OCT.
