The Different Types of Glaucoma Surgery

There are a few different surgeries that our optometrists may suggest for glaucoma. Some of these include the following:

  • Argon Laser Trabeculoplasty (ALT) —This procedure aims helps remove blockages in the eye, which allows fluid to flow smoothly. If this procedure does not provide the results you desire, Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) can be considered. This surgery uses a low-level laser to lower intraocular pressure.
  • Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) Narrow-angle glaucoma occurs when there is less space than usual between the iris and cornea. Due to the narrowing, fluid cannot drain from the eye normally and builds up. Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) involves creating a hole in the iris using a laser beam, which helps with fluid drainage.
  • Cyclophotocoagulation If other laser treatments are not effective in reducing fluid buildup or lowering pressure, Cyclophotocoagulation might be recommended.
  • fail to reduce accumulation and lower pressure, cyclophotocoagulation might be recommended. During the surgery, a laser beam is transmitted through the sclera, which produces intraocular fluid. By targeting and destroying some of the tissue, less eye fluid will build up in the eye. Cyclophotocoagulation may need to be repeated to maintain the proper pressure level.

Our eye doctors may suggest glaucoma surgery if other treatments have not been helpful to prevent damage to the optic nerve and preserve your vision. Along with that, if your eye starts narrowing, surgery may need to be repeated. It's important to note that if you have already experienced vision loss due to glaucoma, surgery cannot restore it. However, it can effectively prevent father vision loss.
