What is Dry Eye Syndrome and What Causes it?

Dry eye results from a lack of moisture or outer lipid layer on the surface of the eye, causing symptoms such as fluctuating vision, burning sensation, and red eyes.  Dry eye can also lead to inflammation, which is chronic and progressive and needs treatment as soon as possible. Several factors can cause dry eye, including aging, hormonal changes, environmental factors, certain medications, and underlying health conditions.

What are the Different Types of Dry Eye?

There are two main types of dry eye. The most common type is evaporative dry eye, resulting from a decreased secretion of oil from the meibomian glands located in the eyelids. Aqueous-deficient dry eye, on the other hand, is caused by a decreased production of tears by the lacrimal glands.

How is Dry Eye Diagnosed and Treated?

At Broadway Eye Clinic, we use the latest technology to assist the doctor in determining the multiple factors contributing to your dry eye disease.  Once we determine the underlying causes and severity of your dry eye, we prescribe a customized treatment plan to bring you relief.  We offer highly effective in office treatments including Intense Pulse Light, Lipiflow and Low Level Light therapy.  You may also benefit from many of the at home therapies including omega-3 supplements, eye drops, moist heat masks, lid scrubs and sprays.

How Can I Prevent or Manage Dry Eye?

There are several things you can do to prevent or manage dry eye, including blinking frequently and taking breaks if you stare at a screen for a prolonged time, avoiding smoking and exposure to smoke, wearing sunglasses or protective eyewear when outdoors, using a humidifier to add moisture to the indoor air, maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and visiting an optometrist or eye doctor regularly to monitor your eye health.

When Should I Seek Medical Attention for Dry Eye?

If you experience persistent or severe dry eye symptoms, see an eye doctor right away. Additionally, if you have other symptoms, such as eye pain, discharge, or light sensitivity, this may indicate a more serious eye condition that requires prompt medical attention.  Dry Eye left untreated will progress, so it is best to seek treatment even if you are experiencing mild symptoms.
