Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis and Treatment

It is essential to schedule comprehensive eye exams annually or semi-annually because early detection of an eye condition can help prevent vision loss or blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. The cause of this disease is damage to the retina via blood vessels in the back of the eye. The disease may not have any symptoms at first, but there can be mild vision problems.

At Executive Eye Care in Houston, TX, we offer comprehensive eye exams where we examine the structure of the eyes and the quality of vision to help ensure optimal eye health. We have several options for diagnosing diabetic retinopathy.  Our eye doctor performs routine tests to help determine if DR is present. The visual acuity test measures vision for various distances. We also include pupil dilation, ophthalmoscopy which examines the retina, and a slit lamp examination to check for blood vessels on the iris which could indicate damage to the retina.

Our testing includes imaging using the Optomap retinal camera to view what is going on in the back of the eye. Diabetic retinopathy is treated using various options, including monitoring, laser treatment, vitrectomy, corticosteroid treatment, and anti-VEGF treatment. We co-manage with several ophthalmologist in our area including Retinal Consultants of Texas and Eye Center of Texas.
