Farsightedness Treatment from Our KS or MO Optometrists
Farsightedness is more common than most people realize. Farsightedness, also known as hyperopia, affects as many as 25 percent of the U.S. population. Our Epic Vision Eye Centers optometrists diagnose and treat this problem following a comprehensive eye exam. With twelve locations across both MO and KS, our practice offers convenient locations for patients who live or work in both Kansas or Missouri.
Understanding Farsightedness
Individuals with farsightedness see objects at a distance more clearly than those that are close to them. The cause of hyperopia is an abnormal eye shape. In a normal eye, light enters the eye and is refracted through the cornea.
Those with hyperopia have abnormally short eyes that do not properly focus light onto the retina. It is also possible to be farsighted due to a misshapen eye lens or cornea.
While symptoms vary among our patients, these are the most common:
- Blurry images, especially with objects that are close
- Eyestrain
- Squinting
- Headache after performing close work for an extended period
Hyperopia Treatment Options
Our optometrists develop customized treatment plans for our patients with hyperopia following comprehensive eye exams. During these exams, patients should expect to discuss their symptoms and health history and undergo multiple tests such as eye dilation and looking through various sets of lenses to measure visual acuity. These examinations can reveal other refractive eye problems such as presbyopia and eye disorders such as cataracts.
Treatment plans for farsighted patients typically include prescribing corrective eyewear or recommending surgery to correct the refractive issue. The easiest and the safest therapy for a farsighted individual is eyeglasses. However, contact lenses benefit many of our patients just as well.
If a patient’s farsightedness falls into the mild to moderate range, refractive eye surgeries such as LASIK or PRK are options to consider.
