Blue Light Glasses

Blue light blocking glasses protect your eyes from harmful blue light. They can prevent eye strain, headaches, and sore necks, especially if you are like most people and you spend most of your day in front of a screen. Here are two frequently asked questions about blue light blocking glasses answered by your optometrist in Riverdale, GA, Dr. Fred Osayi.

What is the problem with blue light?

Blue light, also known as high energy visible light, can cause excess damage to the eyes. Unfortunately, many digital screens emit high levels of blue light, increasing a person’s risk for many types of eye disease, like cataracts and macular degeneration. Blue light also conflicts with a person’s circadian rhythm, which disrupts the body’s natural ability to optimally regulate itself.

What can you do to protect your eyes from blue light?

The simplest remedy for the eye strain caused by blue light is to spend less time at your computer or on your phone. The problem with this approach is that for many of us, less time on our computers and phones just isn't possible. With school children now having to do much of their class time online, the whole family often suffers from problems caused by too much blue light.

It's possible to put a blue light screen over the screen of your desktop computer, and there are screen filters for laptops, phones, and tablets. Protection is also available from computer glasses and anti-reflective lenses. Computer glasses have yellow filters to block blue light without interfering with your ability to see detail on the screen. Anti-reflective and polarized lenses also block blue light from the sun. They greatly improve outdoor vision.

You can get blue light protection in the prescription lenses you need to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and other common eye problems.
