Glaucoma

Eye disease is prevalent in people with serious medical conditions like diabetes. Glaucoma, is one of the worst eye diseases, as it can affect both eyes. Our ophthalmologist, Dr. Leroy Vaughn serving Inglewood, CA, knows a lot about how to treat eye disease such as this one.

What Is Glaucoma?

It is a serious eye disease that can cause partial eyesight loss or total blindness. A dilated eye exam can reveal this disease and what damage, if any, has been done to the eye(s). The disease affects the optic nerve which sets in the back of the eyes. There are two types; open-angle, and angle closure, and each one can exhibit different symptoms. This eye disease is a leading cause of blindness, with open-angle being the more common form of the disease.

If you are having vision problems and want to know if you have this disease, watch out for any of these signs. These signs are seen in patients with angle closure.

  • Intense eye pain
  • Nausea or upset stomach
  • Sudden loss of sight
  • Blurred vision
  • Red eye
  • Severe headache
  • Pupils of different size

This eye disease can be brought on by certain medical conditions. One form can be brought on by people with:

  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure

Sometimes this eye disease is difficult to treat because the underlying medical condition must be treated or controlled first. Diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure can affect vision in a negative way. These two conditions also affect other organs in the body.
