Early Symptoms of Macular Dystrophy

Macular Dystrophy

Macular degeneration is one of the most talked-about eye conditions that affect people as they age. Unfortunately, unlike other conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts, there is no known cure for macular degeneration. There are, however, several types of treatment that can stave off symptoms for years, giving a patient extra years of sight. That is why early detection is so critical. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, make an appointment to speak with an ophthalmologist about your options.

What is Macular Degeneration?

As the macula degenerates, it can no longer process the light that is coming in. The brain "reads" this lack of visual data as a dark spot in the field of vision. As a patient moves their head around, other parts of their eye will register light, however. The brain uses all of this information to create a constantly moving picture that will include dark spots that can seem to float or move around.

There can be other causes for dark spots in a patient's field of vision, but dark spots caused by macular degeneration are usually located in the center of the vision field. As this condition gets worse, the spots will grow larger. If a person can schedule an eye exam as soon as he or she notices these dark spots, it is possible to start several different treatments that are designed to slow down the progression of the disease. Oral medication that includes Vitamin K is usually the first thing that is prescribed, but there are other treatments, such as eye drops that can slow down the degeneration of the macula.
