Cataract Surgery FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions about Cataract Surgery

If you have been diagnosed with cataracts, your eye doctor may have presented you with some options for treatment. Cataract surgery may be one of the options on the table. An ophthalmologist will make this recommendation after assessing the risks and benefits of surgery.

Sina J Sabet MD PC in Alexandria understands your concerns when it comes to cataracts and your overall eye health. These are some of the most common questions people have about cataract surgery.

Why Should You Consider Surgery?

If you have cataracts, you may not notice much change in your vision at first. This is not uncommon, but it may lead you to wonder why you should have your cataracts addressed at all. Cataracts worsen over time. As this progression continues, you may find it more difficult and dangerous to drive and perform other daily tasks. Ultimately, the deciding factor for when you should get cataract surgery should be whether or not your cataracts meaningfully impact your ability to see.

What Happens During Surgery?

When you undergo cataract surgery, your eye surgeon will remove the clouded lens of your eye and put a synthetic lens in its place. The procedure is generally safe, and you can even go home immediately after the procedure is over.

Two methods are used to remove cataracts. One is an ultrasound probe that first breaks up the lens so that it can be removed easily. Another method involves making a small incision and removing the lens. Talk to our eye doctor about which option is right for you.

How Long Does Healing Take after Surgery?

After surgery, you may need to wait several days for your vision to return to its healthy state. You may notice some color tinting in your vision before you fully recover.
